Most shoppers glance at both, decide the bigger number wins, and click buy. Then winter arrives, and the comforter feels thin, or summer arrives, and it feels like a furnace. The comforter is rarely the problem. The reading of the spec sheet usually is.
Here is why the mix-up costs so much money. A luxury down comforter can carry excellent fill power and still leave you cold, because fill power says nothing about how much down went inside. The two numbers answer completely different questions. Once you separate them, the spec sheet stops looking like marketing noise and starts working like a warmth calculator.
What Fill Power Measures in a Luxury Down Comforter

A rating of 750 means a single ounce expands to roughly 750 cubic inches. Bigger clusters trap more air, and trapped air is what keeps body heat from escaping.

- Higher fill power usually means better recovery after compression.
- Higher fill power does not automatically mean a warmer comforter.

The spec sheet carries a third set of figures, and they matter more than people assume. Down-proof cotton is not the same as ordinary cotton. The weave has to be tight enough that clusters cannot work their way through the fabric over years of use.
Thread counts on premium shells range from around 500 to over 1200. Denser weaves hold down better and resist leakage.
Then there is construction. Baffle box stitching creates fabric walls between chambers, letting the down reach full loft. Sewn-through stitching pinches the fabric together, creating cold lines across the bed. Two comforters with matching fill numbers can perform differently on this detail alone.
